State Exchanges

State health insurance exchanges are a group of state regulated insurance plans that allow individuals to choose between various insurance plans. Exchanges will include a wide range of plans and will provide assistance to consumers as they are choosing an appropriate plan. Exchanges must be set up by January 1, 2014. The federal government will subsidize state exchanges when they are first set up and states may unite with the federal government to manage the exchange or to join with other exchanges. If a state opts out of establishing an exchange, the federal government steps in to set up one or more exchange in the state.
